Deutsche Post: SOA solution SOPERA also available for Microsoft .NET from June
To permit seamless integration of IT systems based on Microsoft technology, the SOA solution of Deutsche Post will also run on the Microsoft platform from June 2007. This enables seamless integration across platforms based on advanced webservices. Through the release of SOPERA at the end of March, other enterprises now also benefit from this development.
Bonn, 2 April 2007. Deutsche Post is regarded as a trendsetter in conceptual design and operation of service-oriented architectures and with SOPERA has a well-proven and powerful SOA solution at its disposal. To permit faster and simpler integration of IT systems based on Microsoft technology in the future, the logistics operator has decided to also make its Java-based software available for .NET. To do so, Deutsche Post is using the new Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) of the .NET 3.0 Framework. The goal is to use services and existing infrastructure across the company and across different platforms.
“Depending on the job in hand, many major companies use different technology platforms when developing their IT systems, says Dr. Johannes Helbig, CIO of the Letters Division of Deutsche Post, describing his perspective of the situation. “In our opinion, that is both right and necessary. But it requires being able to revert to suitable solutions that permit flexible and needs-driven integration regardless of the platform involved. Up to now, only simple webservices were available to connect Java- and Microsoft-based systems, which satisfied the company’s security and reliability demands only with limitations. Dr. Alexander Scherdin, Senior Vice President and responsible for IT architecture and quality management in the letters area adds: “Especially when building an enterprise-wide SOA, it is essential that data and functionalities can be used as services independent of the underlying technology.
The opening of the SOPERA SOA solution to Microsoft .NET 3.0 technologies is one result of the successful collaboration between Deutsche Post and Microsoft. “We both agree that the success of companies in the future will depend on how quickly and flexibly they can adapt their business applications and IT systems to the rapid market developments. Here, service-oriented architecture plays a decisive role, says Karin Sondermann, Business Development Manager for Platform Value at Microsoft’s Developer Platform & Strategy Group.
