SOA Runtime Project Takes Wing at Eclipse

Development of a server-side SOA Runtime Framework at Eclipse based on contributions from SOA platform vendor SOPERA is making strong progress. At the end of August, the project with the codename "Swordfish" was confirmed by the Community.

(Bonn, 12.09.2007) SOPERA and the Eclipse Foundation are pleased to announce the creation of the Eclipse SOA Runtime project, codenamed Swordfish.  Swordfish will be a complete implementation of a modular SOA runtime framework. The project will be led by SOPERA, a strategic member of the Eclipse Foundation and a SOA platform vendor created based on the technology and experiences developed at Deutsche Post.

"The broad consensus on launching Swordfish lends important impetus to development of an Eclipse-based SOA framework from the very outset", explains SOPERA’s Managing Director, Dr. Ricco Deutscher. Besides the initiator, SOPERA, which is also taking over the project lead for Swordfish, other Eclipse members have already expressed their interest in actively collaborating on the project.

Eclipse Executive Director, Mike Milinkovich, also welcomes the successful launch of Swordfish: "With Swordfish, the Eclipse Community is taking a major step forward in terms of SOA." With the support and involvement of the Eclipse community, the path is now clear for the rapid development of a future-oriented Open Source SOA Framework. "As the project leader, SOPERA is taking on great responsibility," says Milinkovich.

The goal of Swordfish is to realize an Open Source SOA Framework that can be expanded in modular form with SOA components such as registries, messaging systems or BPEL engines, as well as further SOA plug-ins. The use of both open source and commercial components will be supported. With this approach, the Swordfish project is driving standardisation of SOA technology forward significantly. Users will be able to implement best-of-breed concepts more easily and achieve more flexibility and independence in realising service-oriented application worlds.

As its technical basis, Swordfish will use the standard OSGi (Open Services Gateway Initiative), which has great potential to establish itself as a future technology for SOA. In addition, the framework will support existing SOA standards like SCA (Service Component Architecture) and JBI (Java Business Integration). "By supporting SCA and JBI based on OSGi, the key SOA standards will finally be united. By uniting the standards, we are guaranteeing Swordfish users future certainty and at the same time the broadest possible operating basis," says SOPERA manager Deutscher.

Eclipse is an open source community, whose projects are focused on building an open development platform comprised of extensible frameworks, tools and runtimes for building, deploying and managing software across the lifecycle. A large, vibrant ecosystem of major technology vendors, innovative start-ups, universities and research institutions and individuals extend, complement and support the Eclipse Platform.

The Eclipse Foundation is a not-for-profit, member supported corporation that hosts the Eclipse projects. Full details of Eclipse and the Eclipse Foundation are available at www.eclipse.org.

SOPERA supports companies in realizing service-oriented architectures (SOA). SOPERA is based on the SOA platform of SOA pioneer Deutsche Post. Into SOPERA has gone the experience from over five years of developing and operating the platform in a demanding enterprise environment. SOPERA is an open, modular, standard-based SOA framework, supports best-of-breed concepts and covers the entire SOA lifecycle. Independent of Deutsche Post, SOPERA GmbH offers implementation, consulting and the entire support and service for the software.
