Eclipse-Galileo Provides Developers with over 10 Years of SOA Expertise

New runtime components enable implementation of sophisticated enterprise as well as “lightweight” applications

Bonn, 24 June 2009. The Eclipse “Galileo” release will feature an expandable framework for service-oriented architecture (SOA) as a new runtime component. The framework was developed as part of “Swordfish”, an Eclipse project initiated by SOPERA, the German open-source specialist and Strategic Developer Member of the Eclipse Foundation. Galileo’s June 24 release enables users to develop and operate Eclipse-based SOA applications on a license-free basis for the first time. Depending on requirements, implementation of both sophisticated enterprise applications as well as “lightweight” applications is supported.

“Swordfish provides Eclipse users with access to over ten years of expertise on mission-critical SOA platform operations,” explains SOPERA CTO Dr. Ricco Deutscher. SOA makes integrating heterogeneous IT landscapes easier while also providing more flexible support for business processes. The technology is based on work done by Deutsche Post DHL, a pioneering SOA developer which handed over development of the program code at the heart of its internal SOA platform - the Enterprise Service Bus - to the Eclipse Foundation in 2007.

As part of Swordfish, the Enterprise Service Bus was developed into a flexible and decentralized SOA Framework. “By adding additional components the technology can be easily adapted to suit specific business needs while also enabling the implementation of both sophisticated enterprise applications as well as lightweight applications”, explains Deutscher. Swordfish is built on proven open source technologies such as Eclipse Equinox. In addition it incorporates Apache ServiceMix, the SOA functionality of which has been significantly expanded as part of Swordfish.

Swordfish Features Included in Galileo Release
Swordfish realizes a distributed architecture, thus avoiding the bottlenecks that can occur with central components. The platform is therefore highly scalable. Swordfish’s Service Registry also provides a complete overview of existing SOA services, and plays a key role in the reuse of services. In addition, the Registry also provides for the transparent management of services using defined Policies through which "non-functional requirements" – such as response times or encryption – can be conveniently administered. This creates more transparency – plus to alter non-functional requirements not a single line of business code needs to be changed. Swordfish’s distributed architecture, its Registry and Policies ultimately serve to decouple service subscribers. Thus, at a technology level Swordfish realizes a key SOA requirement. "Galileo" also comes complete with tool support.

A Glance at the Swordfish Roadmap
Over the next few months, additional features will be added to Swordfish, with for instance extensive management and monitoring capabilities joining the line up from November 2009. Included in the November release will also be features for effective service / business activity monitoring (SAM / BAM). Elsewhere, Swordfish will receive tools for business process management, a repository for artifacts generated within the context of SOA workflows as well as a security framework. Plus, interfaces for “Hyperic HQ”, a leading open-source software for system management and monitoring, and the open source data integration solution “Talend" will also be added.  “Through its functional scope Swordfish is underscoring its claim to become the leading open-source SOA contender,” said Deutscher. “We have already laid the foundations for this with the current Galileo release.”

SOPERA GmbH (www.sopera.com)
SOPERA provides support to enterprises in realizing service-oriented architecture (SOA). Based on the platform developed by the SOA pioneer Deutsche Post, the SOPERA ASF (Advanced Service Factory) is available as open source. SOPERA ASF has been developed on the basis of proven experience of development and operation within a demanding enterprise environment. SOPERA is open source, modular, standards-based, supports best of breed concepts and covers the entire SOA lifecycle. Independent from Deutsche Post, SOPERA GmbH provides support and services around the open-source platform.
